What Are Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges In St Neots Cambridgeshire 300x222Dental bridges are essential dental prosthetics designed to replace one or more missing teeth, bridging the gap between adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. These restorations consist of one or more artificial teeth, known as pontics, which are anchored in place by dental crowns, also called abutments.

Here’s how dental bridges work:

  1. Pontics: The pontics are custom-made to match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth. They fill the gap left by missing teeth, restoring your smile’s aesthetics and functionality.
  2. Abutments: Adjacent healthy teeth on either side of the gap serve as abutments. These teeth are prepared and crowned to hold the pontic securely in place.
  3. Fixed Restoration: Dental bridges are non-removable, fixed restorations, meaning they are permanently cemented into position. Once in place, they function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Who Could Benefit from Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges offer a valuable solution for a variety of individuals dealing with tooth loss or gaps in their smiles. Here’s a closer look at who could benefit from dental bridges:

  1. Tooth Loss Sufferers: Dental bridges are ideal for individuals who have lost one or more teeth due to decay, trauma, or other dental issues. Bridges can effectively replace missing teeth, restoring the smile’s appearance and function.
  2. Improved Chewing Function: Missing teeth can hinder one’s ability to chew food properly. Dental bridges restore chewing function, making it easier and more comfortable to enjoy a variety of foods.
  3. Speech Enhancement: Gaps in the mouth can affect speech clarity. Dental bridges can help individuals speak more clearly and confidently.
  4. Preventing Tooth Shifting: When a tooth is missing, adjacent teeth may shift or tilt into the gap, causing misalignment and bite problems. Dental bridges prevent this shifting, preserving the alignment of neighbouring teeth.
  5. Support for Facial Structure: Tooth loss can lead to changes in facial structure and sagging of the cheeks. Dental bridges help maintain proper facial support, promoting a more youthful appearance.
  6. Alternatives to Dentures: For individuals who prefer a fixed and non-removable solution over dentures, dental bridges are an excellent choice.
  7. Preserving Oral Health: By replacing missing teeth, dental bridges contribute to the overall health and stability of the oral cavity, preventing potential dental issues in the future.
  8. Convenient and Efficient: Dental bridges are a convenient and time-efficient tooth replacement option, often requiring fewer appointments compared to other options like dental implants.
  9. Aesthetic Concerns: Those seeking to enhance their smile’s aesthetics by filling gaps left by missing teeth can benefit from dental bridges. Bridges are customised to match the colour, shape, and alignment of natural teeth, creating a seamless and attractive smile.

The Procedure for Getting Dental Bridges

The process of obtaining dental bridges typically involves several well-defined steps, ensuring a successful and long-lasting restoration of your smile:

  1. Initial Consultation: The journey begins with a comprehensive consultation with our dentist. During this appointment, the dentist assesses your oral health, discusses your dental history, and evaluates your specific needs and goals.
  2. Treatment Planning: Based on the evaluation, our dentist will develop a treatment plan tailored to your unique situation. This plan includes choosing the most appropriate type of dental bridge, considering factors such as the location of the gap and the health of adjacent teeth.
  3. Tooth Preparation: To create a stable foundation for the bridge, the abutment teeth (the healthy teeth adjacent to the gap) are prepared. This involves reshaping and recontouring these teeth to accommodate the dental crowns that will anchor the bridge.
  4. Impression Taking: Precise impressions or moulds of your prepared teeth and the gap are taken. These impressions serve as the basis for crafting a custom bridge that fits seamlessly into your mouth.
  5. Temporary Bridge: While the permanent bridge is being meticulously fabricated in a dental laboratory, you may receive a temporary bridge to protect the prepared teeth and maintain your smile’s appearance.
  6. Custom Bridge Creation: Skilled dental technicians craft the permanent bridge using the impressions and specifications provided by your dentist. The bridge is customised to match the colour, shape, and alignment of your natural teeth.
  7. Bridge Placement: Once your permanent bridge is ready, you return to the dental office for its placement. The temporary bridge is removed, and the dentist ensures that the permanent bridge fits correctly, aligns with your bite, and looks natural. The bridge is securely cemented or bonded in place, anchoring the pontic (artificial tooth) in the gap and anchoring the crowns to the abutment teeth.
  8. Bite Adjustment: Your dentist checks and adjusts your bite to ensure that it’s comfortable and properly aligned with the new bridge. Any necessary modifications are made for a harmonious bite.
  9. Final Polishing: The bridge is polished to match the sheen of your natural teeth, resulting in a seamless and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  10. Post-Care Instructions:  Our dentist provides guidance on maintaining and caring for your new dental bridge. Proper oral hygiene practices and regular check-ups are crucial to ensure the bridge’s longevity.

I recently brought my daughter to Priory Park Dental Practice for an emergency tooth extraction. I was blown away by the level of service we received. From the moment we walked in the door, the staff made us feel welcomed and at ease. The dentist took the time to explain everything to my daughter and put her at ease throughout the procedure. The office was clean and well equipped. The whole experience smooth and efficient. I cannot thank the team enough for making what could have been a scary situation for my daughter, a positive one. I would highly recommend this practice to anyone in need of dental care.

I followed my dentist here from another practice and wow what a difference all the staff are friendly and professional. All the news of can't get an appointment during covid is rubbish. Phoned on Monday as had a problem. Was asked to phone back the following day at 8.00am was seen at 9.00am. As always great service thank you. People forget they are following guidelines set out by the government in these unprecedented times.
